The Department of Graduate Studies was established in the Deanship of Scientific Research and Graduate Studies in 1977, and it was entrusted with the task of supervising graduate studies in the Deanship. The first master’s program was established in the Department of Education in 1978 with the aim of qualifying teachers of the Ministry of Education and stimulating the movement of educational research and studies. Master’s programs were established In the College of Engineering in 1981, followed by the College of Science departments in 1982 and 1983. In 1994, the first class was accepted for the Ph.D. in Arabic Language, Literature and Criticism, and it continued to expand gradually, as the number of doctoral programs became (16) and the number of master’s programs was (73). There is an ambitious plan to establish doctoral and master’s programs in departments that have the appropriate capabilities.

• Preparing high-level specialists to meet the requirements of comprehensive development plans and the needs of society.

• Organizing and following up on applications for admission to postgraduate programs in coordination with departments.
• Following up on the applications of students accepted into academic programs and organizing their admission process with the Admission and Registration Department.
• Following up on students’ conditions and transactions in terms of postponement and extension, determining the course of study, appointing supervisors, and appointing discussion committees.
• Preparing lists of graduates and recommending to the Graduate Placement Council that they be granted the grades they deserve at the end of each semester.
• Course equivalency and calculation for students.
• Follow up, modify and audit study plans.
• Responding to inquiries from students and academic departments regarding graduate studies.
• Issuing documents related to the academic conditions of students.
• Preparing bulletins related to postgraduate studies, the postgraduate studies guide, the university theses guide, and statistics and studies related to postgraduate studies.
